How to Write a Job Post That Reaches Overseas

A posting written for Canadian applicants often lands badly abroad. A few adjustments make a substantial difference.

Be explicit about location

Name the city and province. "Greater Toronto Area" means nothing to someone in Abidjan. "Brampton, Ontario, near Toronto" does.

Say plainly whether the role is on-site. Candidates abroad frequently assume remote is possible when it is not.

State the wage

Not a range with no floor, and not "competitive." An hourly rate in Canadian dollars, with hours per week. Someone weighing a move needs to calculate.

Say whether you support work authorisation

This is the question every candidate abroad has and most postings ignore. If you are willing to make an offer of employment for a work permit, say so. It changes who applies.

If you are not, say that too — it saves everyone time.

Describe the work concretely

Avoid Canadian workplace idiom. "Fast-paced environment" and "wear many hats" translate poorly. Say what the person will actually do, in order.

Set the language expectation honestly

If the job is conducted in English, say so, even where you are hiring under a French-language route. Candidates need to know what they are walking into.

Reduce friction to apply

In many markets people apply from a phone. A posting requiring account creation and a desktop upload loses applicants that one accepting WhatsApp or a simple form does not.

Say what happens next

A single line — "we respond to all applicants within two weeks" — improves application quality more than most employers expect.

FrancoBridge publishes to six French-speaking markets with quick apply and WhatsApp.

This is general information for employers.
